| Mississippi Map Pond Turtles Mississippi Maps are considered to be pretty shy turtles to keep, but they are great for beginners. The overall care is generally the same as for the sliders and painted species, but higher water quality is a little more important. They are excellent swimmers and like most pond turtles, they love to bask in the sun. Because they are such excellent swimmers, they will do best in set-ups with deeper waters. Mississippi Map Turtles are usually good community turtles. Being generally timid, they seldom show aggression. They are omnivores and enjoy our low-fat turtle food, taking a liking to vegetation in their diets as they get older. You’ll enjoy seeing their beautiful and intricate markings, which is how they got their name, as they swim and bask in your pond and enjoy the surroundings you create for them!

LARGER IMAGE | Pond Size African Side Neck Turtles
The African Side Necked Turtle often makes an interesting pet and is quite hardy. In the wild, African Side Necked Turtles usually inhabit shallow ponds or streams with muddy bottoms. This way, they can burrow into the mud and aestivate if conditions become too hot or cold for them to tolerate. They tend to be good swimmers. When handling your African Side Necked Turtle, you should be sure that your turtle is aware of you before you pick it up. Because their necks are often carried to one side, movement on the other side of the turtle's body may frighten it and cause it to snap. Many become quite handle able in captivity, however. At maturity, many African Side Necked Turtles often reach 8 inches in length. Usually, the carapace is slightly domed, and is dark in color, often black. The bottom shell, or plastron, is usually yellow with a dark edge, though the colors of the plastrons may vary from turtle to turtle. Most African Side Necked Turtles have brown colored heads with black or gray spots or dappling. The jaws are usually yellow or tan in color. Their long necks are pulled in to one side, rather than backward into the turtle's shell, and the front of the carapace is hinged. African Side Necked Turtles are found in eastern Africa below the Sahara and much of Madagascar.

LARGER IMAGE | Jumbo Common Snapping Pond Turtle The Snapping Turtle is generally a pretty shy creature that will retreat from anything except dinner. Their heads are so large that the Snapping Turtle can’t withdraw it into its shell. That’s why they rely on their strong jaws for defense and can bite hard if disturbed or antagonized. They are native to still waters - ponds, swamps and slow-running rivers. Common Snapping Turtles have an impressive and well-known sense of smell that they use to track down their meals and sense intruders. Their senses of smell are so strong that they have even been used by the police as detectives in certain cases. The Common Snapping Turtle is the largest of all fresh water turtles native to the United States and are a lot of fun to watch flourish in your pond.

| Eastern Painted Pond Tutles Eastern Painted Turtles are very beautiful turtles with a carapace edge that has red streaks on the bottom while the plastron, or bottom, of the turtle is yellow. It may also have some colored marks. Its legs, neck and tail have red and yellow stripes. It’s these colorful streaks all over the shell and body of this turtle that given it its name! They’ll need deep water to enjoy themselves, because they love swimming and are very active in the water. Out of the water, they’ll need a basking area to sit in the warmth of the light. They are omnivorous animals that will enjoy turtle food and munching on leafy vegetation that’s around your pond. You’ll really love their beautiful colors and watching them swim and bask in your outdoor pond!
